1960s–80s homes: brick veneer, fibro and timber

A big share of Dapto’s homes went up between the 60s and the 80s. That means painted fibro, timber windows and doors, old enamel on the trims, and sometimes several layers of paint that don’t agree with each other. These jobs come down to prep. We check for lead in older paint and handle it safely, sand and prime glossy enamel so the new coat bonds, fill and seal fibro joints, and repair or treat timber before it’s painted. Do that properly and the job lasts years. Skip it and the paint starts peeling within a season or two.

Newer homes in West Dapto, Horsley and Wongawilli

In the newer estates, most of the calls we get are about builder’s-grade paint that marks too easily, plus exterior trims and garage doors fading in the sun. For interiors we recommend a high-quality wash-and-wear finish. From our experience, that’s the difference between walls you can wipe clean with kids and pets, and walls you’re touching up every few months.

Close to the lake, under the escarpment

Dapto sits between Lake Illawarra and the escarpment, so it gets humid summers, damp winters and mould on south-facing walls and eaves that don’t see much sun. Before we paint, we treat the mould, not just cover it, and we use exterior coatings with mould resistance built in. If your house backs onto bush towards Horsley, the eaves and fascias usually need the most attention.
