Decks and fences take a beating in the Illawarra — sun, rain and salt air all work against timber. Done right, staining protects the wood and keeps it looking great; done cheaply, it fades and peels within a season.
How we stain timber
From our experience, staining is its own job and it pays to do it properly. We like to re-stain timber every year or two, and we put on plenty of coats — usually three or four — so it’s really soaked in and properly quenched. That’s what makes it last, rather than sitting on the surface and lifting later.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I re-stain my deck or fence?
We recommend every year or two. Timber that’s exposed to full sun and coastal weather is best kept on top of, rather than left until it’s grey and splitting.
Why so many coats?
Three to four coats let the stain really soak into the timber. A single thin coat looks okay for a few months, then it’s back to square one.
