From our experience, especially with wooden kitchens, we strongly recommend painting them before investing tens of thousands in a full replacement. It gives your kitchen a dramatic transformation at just about 10% of the cost of replacing it.

You can also refresh the whole look by changing the handles and hinges, which makes it feel brand new. We often go with a two-tone approach — a different colour on the bottom cabinets to the top — or a full colour change, whatever suits the room.

How we do it — and why it lasts

The process matters as much as the colour. We start with a sealing coat — we often recommend Zinsser as a base oil coat to prevent any bleed-through coming through the finish. Then we topcoat with a hard-wearing finish. We especially recommend Dulux’s kitchen range, which is known for its durability and scratch resistance, and the colour stays vibrant for years.

This is the part DIY jobs get wrong. Ordinary paint is too soft for a kitchen and it scratches; the kitchen range is hard and durable, so it holds up to daily use.

Benchtops too

We can also paint benches — especially wood ones — using epoxy paint, which can even mimic a marble look. It’s both heatproof and waterproof, so it lasts. Most of our clients are absolutely thrilled with the results we’ve achieved, often at just a fraction of the price of replacing the lot.

Is painting right for your kitchen?

Before you go for a full replacement, we strongly suggest painting first — especially if you’re on a budget, selling your home, or updating rental properties. Of course, if the kitchen is extremely old and brittle, sometimes a replacement is unavoidable. But in many cases the transformation is simply stunning.
