House Painters in Woonona, Bulli & Thirroul: What Northern Illawarra Homes Need

The northern suburbs between Woonona and Thirroul are some of the most exposed painting country in the Illawarra. The houses sit on the coastal strip, the escarpment pushes weather straight at them, and the salt air gets to everything. At Colourland Painting we’re a second-generation Wollongong painting business with 35+ years of combined experience, and what we’ve learned working along this coast is that a paint job here has to be planned around the weather, not just the colour chart.

Salt air changes how we prep

Homes in Woonona, Bulli and Thirroul cop salt spray, and it leaves a film on weatherboards, render, fascias and gutters that you can’t always see. Paint over it and it fails early, usually as bubbling or flaking within a couple of seasons. So our first step on any exterior here is a proper wash, then letting everything dry fully before we touch a brush. After that we scrape, sand and spot-prime anything bare. It’s the least glamorous part of the job and the part that decides how long the finish lasts.

Older homes, mixed materials

This stretch has a good mix of old weatherboard cottages, fibro, brick and newer rendered builds, sometimes on the same street. Each one needs a different approach. Timber needs sound primer and sealed joints, fibro needs the right sealer, and render needs any hairline cracks filled and flexible coating over the top. We look at what the house is actually made of before we quote, which is why we ask to see it in person rather than price it off a photo. More on this in our guide to painting weatherboard and fibro exteriors in the Illawarra.

Timing around coastal weather

Humidity and sea breezes affect drying and curing. We watch the forecast closely and avoid painting in the middle of a damp week or on a hot, windy afternoon when paint skins too fast. In practice that means a job can shift a day or two, and we’d rather tell you that up front than rush it. Our guide on painting coastal salt-air homes goes into the products we recommend.

Interior work and occupied homes

Plenty of families up here stay in the house while we work. We plan rooms in sequence, protect floors and furniture, and clean up each day. If you’re after a full repaint, we cover house painting across Wollongong and the Illawarra, and for suburb detail you can see our Woonona painters page, Bulli painters page and Thirroul painters page. Exterior-only jobs are covered under our exterior painting services.
