Industrial Painting Wollongong

Paint in a factory, warehouse or workshop isn’t there to look nice. It protects steel from rust, keeps floors safe, marks out where forklifts and people go, and stands up to heat, chemicals and constant traffic. Colourland Painting does industrial painting across Wollongong and the Illawarra, from small workshops in Unanderra to warehouses and plant around Port Kembla, Kembla Grange and Albion Park Rail.

We’re a second-generation local business with over 35 years of combined experience. For a site visit and a fixed written quote, call 0421 755 294.

What we paint on industrial sites

  • Warehouses and factories: internal walls, columns, roof structures and exterior cladding.
  • Structural steel: portal frames, mezzanines, handrails, stairs and platforms.
  • Rust treatment and protective coatings: we take corroded steel back, treat it, prime it and recoat it so it lasts on the coast.
  • Floors and line marking: walkways, forklift lanes, loading zones and safety colour coding.
  • Workshops and trade units: repaints between tenants and refreshes for operating businesses.
  • Wash-down and wet areas: coatings for walls that get water, detergent and pressure spray every day.

The Illawarra is hard on steel

Living here, you know what the salt air does to metal. Industrial buildings near the coast and around the port corrode faster than the same building inland, and once rust gets under a coating it spreads underneath while the surface still looks fine. That’s why we don’t paint over it. We remove the loose rust and failed coating, treat what’s left, and use a primer and topcoat system made for that surface and exposure. A paint system that suits a Sydney office won’t last on a cladding wall that faces the wind at Port Kembla.

Working on a live site

Most industrial clients can’t shut down for painters, so we fit in around them:

  • We complete your site induction and work within your permit-to-work system.
  • We prepare SWMS for higher-risk work, including heights, elevated work platforms and work near plant.
  • We barricade and sign work zones and keep forklift and pedestrian routes clear.
  • We work in stages, nights, weekends or during shutdown periods to keep production going.
  • One contact person runs the job from start to finish.

Recent job: an industrial wash-down site

One of our recent commercial jobs was a car wash in the Illawarra. It’s about as harsh as a wall can get: water, detergent and high-pressure spray all day, plus sun and salt air. The old red coating had chalked and flaked back to bare patches. We washed down, sanded back, spot-primed and recoated the bays, refreshed the black entry structure and redid the safety yellow on the posts and bollards. The full write-up and before and after photos are on our commercial painters Wollongong page.

How an industrial job runs

  1. Site walk. We look at surface condition, corrosion, access, hazards and your operating hours.
  2. Written scope and fixed quote. It lists the prep method, the coating system, the stages and the timeline.
  3. Prep. Cleaning and degreasing, removing rust and loose coating, then priming. This is where the coating’s life is decided.
  4. Application. Spray, brush or roller, depending on the surface and how much overspray the site can tolerate.
  5. Handover. We do a walk-through, fix any defects and leave a clean site.

Industrial painting FAQs

Can you paint while the site is operating?

Usually, yes. We stage the work, barricade zones and schedule the noisy or high-risk tasks for nights, weekends or shutdowns.

Do you paint over rust?

No. Painting over rust traps it, and it keeps spreading underneath. We remove the loose rust, treat the steel and prime it before any topcoat goes on.

Do you do line marking and safety colours?

Yes. We do walkways, forklift lanes, loading zones and safety colour coding on floors, posts and bollards.

Which areas do you cover?

All of Wollongong and the Illawarra, including Unanderra, Kembla Grange, Port Kembla, Dapto, Albion Park Rail and Shellharbour. We also travel across NSW for larger jobs.
