Paint Your Kitchen Instead of Replacing It: A Wollongong Painter’s Take

A new kitchen can cost you forty grand. A painted one can look just as fresh for a fraction of that. After years of doing both kinds of jobs around Wollongong, here’s why we so often tell people to paint before they rip everything out.

You can get a brand-new look for around 10% of the cost. Instead of spending $40,000 on a full replacement, you can paint the kitchen, seal it properly, and walk away with something that looks brand new for a fraction of the price. We can do it one clean tone throughout, or two tones — say a different colour on the bottom cabinets to the top — which looks fantastic and modern. Swap the handles and hardware while you’re at it and the whole thing feels far more premium. For what it costs, the difference is hard to believe.

But you have to use the right paint. This is the part people get wrong when they try it themselves. Normal paint is too soft for a kitchen — it scratches and chips, and within months it looks worse than when you started. We use a proper kitchen-range paint that’s hard and durable, made to handle daily use without scratching. That’s the whole secret to a kitchen respray that actually lasts.

Tired benchtops? You might not need to replace those either. If your benchtops are timber, we can put an epoxy coating over the top that genuinely looks great. We can even mix colours to give it a marble look. We’ve done this for plenty of clients and we always hear the same thing back — that it looked amazing, and they couldn’t believe they’d nearly spent forty grand on a whole new kitchen to get a similar finish.

If you’ve been staring at a dated kitchen and dreading the cost of replacing it, get a painter to look at it first. Often the answer is a weekend’s work and a few hundred dollars of the right materials — not a full renovation.
