Why We Use Dulux: 35+ Years of Lessons on Paint That Lasts

People sometimes ask why we’re particular about paint brands. After more than 35 years of combined experience, the honest answer is simple: we use what we’ve watched hold up — and we’ve seen the difference up close.

What we’ve seen with the cheaper brands. Over the years we’ve worked with a range of products, and with some of the cheaper ones we’ve seen paint choke, flake, and even discolour over time. They can look fine for the first year, then it’s downhill from there. When you’re paying for a paint job, that first year looking good isn’t the point — the next ten are.

Why we lean on Dulux. With Dulux, over a long history, we just haven’t seen those problems. The proof we point to is the touch-ups: we’ve gone back to homes we painted ten years earlier, touched up a section, and the colour still matched exactly. That tells you the coating held its colour and didn’t fade or shift over a decade out in the weather. That’s what you want from an exterior, especially here on the coast where the sun and salt are brutal on paint.

For roofs, the same thinking applies. On roof jobs we like to use a quality membrane coating. The shine and the colour last much longer, and that’s the whole reason you paint a roof in the first place — to protect it and keep it looking right for years, not months. With Colorbond, there’s no real issue with the roof itself for decades, but once it starts to fade, that’s the time to paint it. Leave it too long and it can start to rust, and then you’re looking at a $20,000–$30,000 roof replacement instead of a paint job that costs a fraction of that.

The takeaway isn’t “always buy the most expensive tin.” It’s that the paint is a small part of the total cost of a job, and skimping on it is where people get burned. Good prep and good product are what make a paint job last — and lasting is the only thing that actually saves you money.
