Best Paint for Coastal & Salt-Air Homes in the Illawarra

Living near the water is the reason a lot of us love the Illawarra — but it’s hard on a house. Salt air, strong sun and the sea breeze wear paint down faster here than they do inland, and it’s the number one thing we take into account when we quote an exterior. After 35+ years painting around Wollongong, here’s what actually holds up on the coast.

Salt is the enemy, and it’s invisible. Salt carried in on the breeze settles on your walls, eaves and windows even a few streets back from the beach. You can’t always see it, but paint won’t bond to it. That’s why on coastal jobs we wash surfaces down properly before we do anything else — skip that and even the best paint lifts within a couple of years.

Quality exterior paint earns its keep here. We prefer Dulux for exteriors, and the coast is exactly why. Over the years we’ve gone back to homes we painted a decade earlier, touched up a section, and the colour still matched — that tells you the coating held its colour through ten years of sun and salt. With cheaper products we’ve watched paint choke, flake and discolour, and out here that happens faster. The paint is a small part of the total job cost, so it’s the last place to cut corners.

Colour choice matters more on the coast. Strong coastal sun fades dark colours faster, especially on the north and west walls that cop the most sun. Mid-tones and quality tinted whites tend to hold up better and hide the inevitable weathering. If you love a dark feature colour, we’ll use it where it’s protected and steer you to something more durable where the sun’s brutal.

Prep beats everything. On an exterior near the water, the difference between a job that lasts 10 years and one that lasts 3 is almost always the prep — washing off salt and grime, dealing with any flaking or chalking, priming bare spots. Two quotes can look identical on day one and completely different after two winters.

Stay ahead of it. We recommend repainting coastal exteriors every 7 to 10 years, because once the sun and salt break the coating down and the cladding drops below 100%, it never fully comes back no matter how much prep we do. Repaint on time and you’re protecting the building, not just its looks.
