Paint Sheen Guide: Matte, Satin or Gloss for Wollongong Homes

People spend hours agonising over colour and barely a second on sheen — but the finish you pick matters just as much for how a room looks and how well it wears. Here’s how we think about matte, satin and gloss on homes around Wollongong.

Matte (flat) — beautiful, but choose your rooms. A flat finish hides wall imperfections better than anything else and gives ceilings and formal rooms a lovely soft look. The trade-off is it’s the hardest to clean. On a plain ceiling or a low-traffic wall it’s ideal; in a hallway with kids’ handprints, it’s asking for trouble.

Low-sheen / matte wash-and-wear — our go-to for most walls. For general interior walls we almost always recommend a high-quality wash-and-wear finish. It has just enough sheen that you can wipe marks, scuffs and handprints straight off, so the walls stay looking new for far longer. In a busy home or a rental, that alone pays for itself. It’s the sweet spot between looks and durability.

Satin / semi-gloss — for the surfaces that cop a beating. Doors, skirting boards, window frames, architraves and cabinetry take knocks and need regular wiping, so a satin or semi-gloss holds up far better and cleans easily. It also gives trim a slight crispness against the flatter walls, which looks sharp.

Gloss — trim and features, used sparingly. Full gloss is tough and wipeable but it shows every imperfection in the surface underneath, so the prep has to be spot on. We use it where you want a hard, standout finish — a front door, feature joinery — rather than across big areas.

Kitchens and wet areas are their own thing. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries need a finish that handles moisture and scrubbing. For a cabinet respray we use a proper hard-wearing kitchen-range paint rather than a normal wall paint — normal paint is too soft there and scratches within months.

The higher the sheen, the better the prep has to be. This is the bit people miss: gloss and semi-gloss reflect light, and that light shows up every bump, patch and sanding mark. So the shinier the finish you want, the more the surface prep underneath matters. It’s a big part of why a properly done trim job costs what it does.
