Roof painting is one of those jobs people aren’t sure about, so here’s our honest take after years of doing them around the Illawarra.

Colorbond. To be honest, there’s no real issue with a Colorbond roof quality-wise – they can last decades. But once it starts to fade, that’s when we genuinely advise getting it painted. The reason is simple: if you leave it too long, it can start to rust, and then you’re looking at replacing the roof for twenty to thirty thousand dollars – where painting it might cost you around 10% of that. So painting a faded Colorbond roof in time is about protecting it, not just looks.

Tiles. With tiles, honestly, there’s no real need to paint them for the roof to keep working – it’s mostly about the look. Painting tiles won’t stop them doing their job and leaving them unpainted won’t break them. So tile roof painting is a cosmetic decision: if you want to freshen up the look of the house, it makes a big difference; if you’re purely worried about function, it’s usually not essential.

The product matters. When we do paint a roof, we like to use a quality membrane coating. The shine and the colour last much longer, which is the whole point – you’re protecting the roof and keeping it looking right for years, not months. We’ve seen cheaper materials look good for the first year and then go downhill fast.

The short version: if your Colorbond is fading, get onto it before it rusts. If it’s tiles, it’s your call on looks. Either way, we’re happy to take a look and give you a straight answer.
