Is roof painting actually worth it?

This is the big one. A full roof replacement is a massive spend. Painting and restoration, by comparison, is a fraction of that cost — so if your roof is sound and just looking old and faded, painting it is a genuinely smart way to get years more life and a fresh look without the huge bill. What proper roof painting actually involves
Like everything we do, the prep is what separates a job that lasts from one that peels within a year. A proper job runs roughly like this:
- High-pressure clean — stripping off years of dirt, moss, lichen and chalky old coating. Paint won’t stick to a dirty roof.
- Repairs — replacing broken tiles, re-bedding and re-pointing ridge caps, treating any rust on metal roofs.
- Priming/sealing — the right primer for the roof type so the topcoats bond properly.
- Coating — usually two or three coats of a proper roof membrane, sprayed for an even finish.
If someone’s quoting you a roof painting job with no mention of cleaning, repairs and priming, that’s a red flag. Spraying colour over a dirty, broken roof is exactly the kind of work that makes people think roof painting doesn’t last.
